Letters of Ambrose Bierce [manuscript], 1899-1909.

Bierce writes to S.G. Blythe, 1899 November 27, editor of Cosmopolitan Magazine, that he has not written any fiction lately and is not writing for magazines, though he declares Cosmopolitan to be better than most. On 1909 October 27, he returns some verses to an unidentified correspondent explaining he has no connection with Cosmopolitan.

Ambrose Bierce was born in Horse Cave Creek, Ohio, on June 24, 1842. After military service in the Civil War, he settled in San Francisco, where he met Mark Twain and became a columnist and writer. Bierce became known for his sharp, sarcastic wit while writing for the "Argonaut," the "Wasp," and the "San Francisco Examiner."
